Christopher Fox

Christopher D. Fox is Bonhams Skinner's Vice President and Director of Historic Arms & Militaria and Associate Director of American Furniture and Decorative Arts. He specializes in military and civil arms used in 18th and 19th century America, and early American material culture, including early metalware, ceramics, and household items.

In his roles, Christopher has brought some exceptional items and collections to auction, including the Bill Ahearn Collection, the William Rose Colonial and Revolutionary War Arms Collection, and the upcoming Fine Eagle Pommel Swords from the Robert Byrne Collection in autumn 2022.

Christopher has spent much of his life immersed in early American material culture. While attending the University of Michigan, he worked at the William L. Clements Library where he focused on cataloging early military manuscripts and document collections. After graduation, he began his career as an archeologist at Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinac City, Michigan, and Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland.

Prior to joining Bonhams Skinner in 2014, Christopher served for 20 years as Curator of Collections at Fort Ticonderoga Museum in northern New York State, where he established himself as a recognized authority on early military arms, accouterments, and related military and domestic objects. After being appointed Director of Historic Arms & Militaria in 2020, Christopher instituted numerous departmental improvements that have resulted in the consignment of several significant collections with lots achieving record auction prices.

Christopher has authored numerous articles and lectured on a wide variety of topics including 18th-century British military firearms and powder horns, early New York militia uniforms, Seven Years' War period barrack room arrangements, mid-18th century English ceramics, and the material culture associated with chocolate in the 18th-century. He has spoken at seminars and conferences at Fort Ticonderoga, Historic Deerfield, Fort Stanwix and other historical institutions, and has assisted in exhibition development at local history museums. He has appeared in several history-based television programs including PBS television's acclaimed series History Detectives and is a featured appraiser on The Antiques Roadshow.

In addition to Christopher's love for early militaria, he enjoys competitive target sports and competing in local small-bore pistol and rifle matches.
