London – Mickey Snake, 2015, by the illusive Street artist Banksy was the top lot of Bonhams British. Cool. sale, achieving £330,600 against a pre-sale estimate of £150,000 - 200,000. The sculpture, featuring the outline of the famous cartoon mouse inside a snake, was from the same edition as the version shown at Banksy's Dismaland in 2015.
The 207-lot sale, which ran online on bonhams.com from 7-16 April, made a total £901,356. View full list of results.
Suzanne Irvine, Bonhams Head of Sale, commented: "We are delighted with the results of this sale and particularly Banksy's Mickey Snake which exceeded expectations. The sale also saw strong results for prints, with editions by David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Frank Auerbach, L. S. Lowry, and Damien Hirst all performing well."
Other highlights included:
• David Hockney R.A. (born 1937), Pretty Tulips, 1969. Sold for £56,280, a new world record for the print.
• Laurence Stephen Lowry R.A. (1887-1976), Going to the Match, 1972. Sold for £33,280.
• Banksy (born 1974), Golf Sale, 2003. Sold for £28,160.
• Bridget Riley (British, born 1931), Ra 2, 1981. Sold for £24,320.
• Frank Auerbach (1931-2024), Six Etchings of Heads, 1980-81. Sold for £20,480, a new world record for the print series.
• Nomonochrome by Jaime Gili, a 1971 Authi Mini 1000 'Art Car'. Sold for £11,500.
Amongst the highlights of the sale was a collection from journalist and author Dylan Jones, which included For the Love of God, 2012 by Damien Hirst, which sold for £7,680.
Fashion highlights from Dylan Jones' collection will be sold as part of the Weekly Men's Fashion sale, Bonhams' first dedicated men's fashion sale, which will run from 23 April – 1 May online on bonhams.com.
