Los Angeles – A collection of over 120 Surrealist and Old Master prints and unique works achieved white glove results, 100% sold by lot, with many lots soaring beyond their estimates at Bonhams when the sale closed on January 17. Carefully curated by esteemed businessman and philanthropist Urban S. Hirsch III (1941-2024), the sale featured a range of fantastical works by prominent 20th century artists and influential Renaissance artists. The highlight of the sale was a set of intricate prints by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569) titled The Seven Deadly Sins, 1558 which sold for $89,400 – more than 4x its estimate and a record price for the edition. Overall, Surrealist Treasures | The Urban S. Hirsch III Collection achieved $778,000.
Prints by two influential 20th century Surrealists – Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) and Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) – also saw significant interest. Carrington's Tuesday, 1987 sold for $76,700, 38x its estimate, and achieving a record for that edition. Birthday (Self Portrait at Age 30), c. 1970 by Tanning sold for $20,500, a record for that edition and more than 6x its estimate.

Additional highlights of the collection include:
• Belvedere, a lithograph from 1958 by M.C. Escher sold for $51,200, 2x its estimate.
• Eight Hand and Foot Table, circa 1970 Pedro Friedeberg (b. 1936) sold for $15,360.
• Les Bijoux Indiscrets (Kaplan 3), 1963 by René Magritte (1898-1967) sold for $15,360.
• The Seven Virtues, c. 1559-60, a set of prints, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder sold for $33,280.
