Netsuke Soars Past Estimates at Bonhams' Dedicated Sale

New York – An 18th century wood netsuke of a sitting monkey by Masanao (Kyoto, active 18th century) achieved more than 28 times its estimate when it sold for US$140,200 at Bonhams' Netsuke from American Collections sale which closed on October 17. Also soaring well above its estimate was an 18th century large wood netsuke of a tiger cradling her cub which sold for $83,050. The sale featuring over 150 of the miniature sculptural masterpieces achieved US$567,500 overall.

"Collectors' enduring fascination and love for these small sculptures is exciting and Bonhams continues to see strong prices, often five-figure sums, at auction," commented Jeff Olson, Bonhams Director of the Japanese Department in New York. "We have set ourselves as market leaders in this area - continuing to hold the world record price for a netsuke which sold for $441,375 in 2022 – and the success of this dedicated sale strengthens that position."
