Paris – The Fina Gomez Collection of Modern Ceramics sale Part III, which offered ceramics by various artists including a large selection of ceramics by Cristina Merchán, was 100% sold by lot on Wednesday 10 July on Bonhams.com. The top lots were a glazed stoneware vase by Cristina Merchán which sold for €5,632 and a glazed earthenware vase by Claire Debril which achieved €3,328.
The 164-lot sale made a total of €55,565. This exceptional collection illustrated Fina Gomez's taste for contemporary ceramics from the 1960s to the 1990s.
Marcus McDonald, Director of Design at Bonhams, said: "We are pleased to have sold the sale 100% by lot and introduced new ceramic artists to the market. This third part was a renewed tribute to Fina Gomez who loved and collected ceramics throughout her life. A new auction offering the last part of the collection is planned in 2025."
A vase executed circa 1975 by Robert Deblander was sold for €2,304 (estimate: €500 - 700). A glazed Sèvres porcelain bowl inscribed "En hommage à Francine Del Pierre 1968 Fance Franck N°1" by Fance Franck sold for €1,664 against an estimate of €500-700.
Among the selection of 28 works by the Venezuelan artist and ceramicist, Cristina Merchán offered at auction, four of them are among the top ten prices. A delicate glazed stoneware sculpture Personnage, 1962-63, was sold for €832. Born in 1926 in Venezuela, Cristina Merchán first studied painting before becoming passionate about ceramics.
