Banksy is King of British Cool At Bonhams New Bond Street Sale

London – Bonhams' popular British. Cool. sale returned to New Bond Street on Thursday 3 March, featuring an array of cool items – from artworks, photographs, and popular cultural memorabilia to fashion pieces, and prints. Yet it was Banksy who, once again, stole the show, with half of the top 10 lots of the sale being by the street artist. The top lot of the sale was the print Girl with Balloon, 2004, which sold for £152,750 against a pre-sale estimate of £80,000 - 120,000.

With 2022 being the Queen's Platinum Jubilee year, one of the other stand-out lots of the sale was Chris Levine's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, Lightness of Being (Crystal Edition), which sold for £10,838. Kate Moss, 2022, a hyper-realist portrait by Kelvin Okafor, which was created exclusively for the sale, was also amongst the highlights, achieving £62,750 against a pre-sale estimate of £10,000-15,000.

The sale made a total of £1,107,414, with 73% sold by lot and 96% sold by value.

These results prove that he remains one of the most important artists living and working in Britain today. We are also thrilled that the prints market in general is vibrant and thriving with amazing results for Peter Blake, Bridget Riley, Damien Hirst and Harland Miller."

We're especially pleased to have achieved such a fantastic result for Kelvin Okafor's portrait of Kate Moss, which was created especially for the sale. I think we've certainly shown that British cool is still alive and kicking."

Other Highlights of the sale included:

• David Bowie (British, 1947-2016), DHEAD XLV, 1997. Sold for £12,750.

• Damien Hirst (born 1965), Politeness, from 'The Virtues' (H9-4), 2021 (unframed). Sold for £21,500.

• Richard Ansett (British, born 1966), BIRTH, 2018. Sold for £7,650.

• Vienne Westwood 'Harris Tweed' Crown, Autumn/Winter 1987-88. Sold for £1,785.
