Marine Pictures & Works of Art

Bonhams is the only international auction house to hold dedicated Marine Sales. Our two auctions a year in London offer important marine paintings from the 18th century through to contemporary works, as well as maritime related artefacts including ship models, pond yachts, nautical instruments, naval and Nelson memorabilia, and figureheads.

Firmly established as the market leader in this highly specialised field, we have achieved exceptional prices for artworks by early maritime artists such as Thomas Buttersworth Robert Salmon and Dominic Serres, who portrayed impressive ship portraits, exotic harbour scenes and important naval battles, with the Battle of Trafalgar being the most sought after by collectors.

Other highlights include naturalistic and informal seascapes by 19th century artists such as James Edward Buttersworth, Charles Edward Dixon, Thomas Somerscales and David James, while later artists - such as Montague Dawson, Norman Wilkinson and William Lionel Wyllie - celebrated the golden age of passenger liners, naval scenes from WWI and WWII, as well as historic and modern yacht races - all themes popular with the market.
