Tracing its roots back 793 years, DRC long ago took its rightful place front and center in the pantheon of vinous excellence. The vineyard contours were defined by Cistercian monks, and its literal modern roots still dive down deep into the region's ancient marl and limestone rich soil. DRC's rich and dramatic history of ownership has been defined by family disputes, bidding wars, revolutions and strokes of genius; the estate's recent director, Aubert de Villaine, once declared his intention for DRC wines to 'touch the eternal' - herein, you can taste it.
If Pinot Noir is terroir's best suitor, the monopoles of La Tache and Romanée Conti may be Burgundy's finest incarnations of the grape's potential. Marked by a simple stone cross is the revered soil of Romanée Conti, the tiny eastern facing, sunshine-rich vineyard running about 300 feet across in either direction and yielding a scant 500 cases of wine annually.
From this classically superb vintage; Romanée Conti fills the glass with breathtaking florality and a poignant balance of contrasts.
