Footnotes

Mêne first exhibited this group at the 1852 Salon under the title Tachiani and Nedjébé, chevaux arabes. Over the years, it became one of his most famous compositions and has been cast in three sizes even after the artist's death in 1879. The present work is a wonderful lifetime cast from 1875 by the Paris foundry Barbedienne.
