These photographs were taken by French photographer Pierre Vandeputte-Manevy (1924-1980). After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts he began work as a photographer with the Keystone Press Agency in Paris. After several years he went to work for Le Figaro, becoming the picture editor. In 1952 he married Doreen Spooner, the first Fleet Street female photographer and the couple moved to London in the late 1950s. Pierre left Le Figaro and became a freelance photographer/door-stepper. He was particularly interested in show business and met the Beatles.
Most of the Beatles photographs are from rehearsals from the group's second appearance on 'Sunday Night At The London Palladium', 12th January 1964. Others on the bill - Alma Cogan, Bruce Forsyth and Dave Allen - appear in some shots. The pictures of the group in the dressing room (including John in a cap) could have been taken during their visit to Paris shortly afterwards.
