Footnotes
Petrilli exhibited this bust of Joan of Arc (Giovanni D'Arco) at the Paris International Exhibition of 1900. The delicately carved, expressive face, the detail of chain and armour, as well as the gilt highlights exude a quality that
helped to establish Petrilli's reputation as well as reinforcing that of Italy as the international centre of marble carving. Petrelli studied at the Art Institute of Florence and then the Academy in 1889-90. He worked with Raffaello Romanelli before setting up his own studio at Via Dei Serragli in Florence. He specialised in Romantic subjects of classical and historical theme, often employing different coloured marbles or gilt highlights for heightened visual effect.
