Footnotes
Issued when Vernon was in command of the ships of the North Sea, responsible for countering any support the French might give to the Stuart cause during the 'Forty Five. Five years earlier, he had issued his famous order that the naval issue of rum be diluted with water; his - and the drink's - nickname of 'Grog' being said to derive from his habit of wearing a grogram boat-cloak.
