Bears do not stand as an intimidation tactic, they do so to improve their senses. Standing allows them to see over obstructions and smell the scents above the surrounding vegetation. With four cubs to care for, Grizzly 399 is quick to investigate anything out of the ordinary. These precious cubs have grown quickly in the two weeks since emerging from the den. It's a testament to 399's experience and wisdom that these cubs are still safe and learning the ways of a grizzly in a world so heavily influenced by people.


Dr. Jane Goodall, a lifelong friend and conservation partner of Thomas D. Mangelsen, has personally witnessed Grizzly 399 in the wild. Seeing this legendary mother bear and her cubs firsthand was an unforgettable experience, deepening Jane's admiration for these intelligent and powerful creatures. This image serves as both a celebration of 399's enduring legacy and a reminder of the urgent need to protect bears and their habitats.
