The 'Grand Tour,' an essential rite of passage for young 18th century aristocrats, exposed the affluent to the treasures of antiquity. Our Grand Tour Sale showcases the scale of decorative art produced throughout this period and celebrates the passion revived by it. As these gentleman gallivanted through the capitals of Europe, importantly Greece, France and Italy, they discovered for themselves the wonders of the ancient world. These splendid sights were reproduced and sold in the form of prints, ceramics and micromosaics and led to a renewed appreciation of classical Europe. When brought home, the objects and stories inspired a revival of ancient styles. Our Grand Tour Sale explores this rich history and the artistic significance of the period, and provides a chance to view the cultural wonders of Europe through 18th century eyes.
