N.B.
Maximilian Julius Leopold of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1752-1785) was a Prussian military officer and general. He died at the age of 32 in the 1785 Oder flood near Frankfurt. Leopold's death was almost immediately transformed into a legendary event in which a selfless Duke, overcome by the urge to save drowning citizens, ventured into dangerous waters in a flimsy boat. While the reality of the event was likely less dramatically heroic, Leopold remains best known for his posthumous reputation for charity, humility, and piety.
