HON'AMI KŌETSU (1558-1637)
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century
The earthenware box covered entirely with an ameyū (ochre/burnt sugar) glaze, the cover with the figure of a seated Kakinomoto no Hitomaro in relief, surrounded by the engraved calligraphy of a poem, inside the box a ceramic suzuri (inkstone) and suiteki (water dropper), the bottom of the box signed Ōhō Kōetsu, the underside of the cover and suiteki with the partial remains of a red lacquer kaō, with a wood tomobako storage box

The poem on the box reads:
Ashibiki no / yamatori no o no / hidari o no / hitori ka mo nemu
Translation:
Trailing, / the mountain pheasant's tail / long and longer this night too, / spent alone will be.
