A LACQUERED WOOD KYŌBAKO (SUTRA BOX) WITH YAKUSHI NYORAI AND THE TWELVE HEAVENLY GENERALS

Japan, Edo period, 18th/19th century
Rectangular set on an openwork base and with a hinged lid, decorated on the sides with applied wood carvings of the Jūni shinshō, Twelve Heavenly Generals, and on the lid with Yakushi Nyorai and attendants Nikkō and Gakkō, the Bodhisattvas of sunlight and moonlight, the gilt-bronze hardware formed as lotus blossoms.
