Footnotes

United States, Bourbon, Rye

In 1974, Gordon Hue rescued ageing barrels from a defunct distillery in Pennsylvania, and enlisted the help of Julian Van Winkle III to bottle them.

The bulk of the whiskey was bottled periodically from the tanked 16 year-old first with a blue wax, then a gold wax, and finally a gold foil until its final release in 2009. There were also close to 250 barrels still aging with Julian Van Winkle III in Lawrenceburg, and these were bottled each year as 17, 18, 19 and finally 20-year old versions.

Julian would revisit the Hirsch label, but this time from a different source. The spirit in the Hirsch Selection Black Wax 13 Year Old is largely from the same Medley Rye that supplies the Family Reserve.
