Footnotes

United States

Founded by George C. Buchanan, the "Whiskey King", in the 1870s, this site, originally known as Greystone Distillery, was one of a handful in his possession, establishing him as one of the largest distillers in Kentucky. His fortunes turned and after declaring bankruptcy his holdings were no longer under his control.

By 1905, after a long and public climb back he resumed his place at the helm. He operated as the Allen-Bradley Distillery and then the Elk Run distillery until Prohibition would separate Buchanan from the distillery once again. Under Federal control the facility was used to store medicinal alcohol.
