"My creativity is a vehicle of self-expression through art and design. Being black and gay has required me to constantly question who I am and my place in society. I've been noticed for all the wrong reasons, and this needs to end for everyone. "Look 1" has a deeper meaning of looking within before looking without while judging because of physical appearance. I've lost a generation of close friends to HIV. Since then, I have donated art to causes supporting research and care for those with HIV.
The bold titles and banners of vintage magazines were designed to be highly recognized from afar and at newsstands. I keep a small collection of vintage magazines because of my interest in graphic design and printed media. Look Magazine's graphic design includes stylish white typography on bold black and gray rectangular backgrounds. It demands attention with style. My collage of photocopied, deconstructed "LOOK" title banners makes a bold midcentury-inspired statement that demands the viewer to look." -Samuel Fleming Lewis
Artist Statement: I am an American artist best recognized for my abstract, mixed media, collage on canvas, and drawings. I'm currently experimenting with digital prints in my practice.
My works include different drawing and drafting techniques. I use and recycle printed images, text, graphic designs, and African art images as media in my collage and drawing works. I often use geometric shapes, abstracted forms, grids, repetition, color, and patterns to develop unique compositions.
The handmade quality of my works attracts the interest of viewers and collectors of my work. As an artist, I produce vibrant compositions that allow viewers to drift into a realm of artistic expression.
I'm not afraid to communicate my issues through art. My works can raise awareness of inequality, prejudice, injustice, racial bias, homophobia, human rights, and other concerns while simultaneously being visually appealing.
