8vo (169 x 106 mm). Modern speckled calf. Slight dampstaining to first few leaves, ownership initials ("RW") on title, scattered browning and spotting.
Provenance: Property from a New England Collector.
FIRST EDITION. "This, perhaps, is the best of Petty's works; and is valuable alike for the authentic information it affords respecting the state of Ireland in the latter part of the 17th century, and for the judicious suggestions of the author with a view to its improvement" (McCulloch, The Literature of Political Economy). In his Verbum sapienti, using the numbers of John Graunt (see lot 27), Petty provided the "first complete and consistent set of national accounts ever to have been made ... a landmark in economic history" (Stone, Some British Empiricists in the Social Sciences: 1650-1900, 1998). ESTC R4596; Keynes 37; Wing P-1931.
