5 volumes bound in 1. 8vo (160 x 102 mm). Rebacked 18th century polished calf ruled in gilt, all edges gilt. Wear to covers, some marginal dampstaining, margins slightly trimmed, small tear to first title with loss to lower outside corner, faded ink inscription on first title, ink ownership inscription to last page of text, lacking blank leaves.

FIRST ESTIENNE EDITION, a complete set of the five parts of Robert Estienne's Scriptores rei rusticae, issued separately in 1543. Together, they form the most important collection of ancient texts on the "rustic arts" - agriculture, gardening, fishing, cooking, herbal medicine, and even beekeeping. This is the first work Estienne printed entirely utilizing a new italic typeface cut by Claude Garamond.
