2 volumes bound in 1. 4to (250 x 197 mm). 1 folding engraved plate. Rebacked contemporary polished calf decorated in blind and gilt, with "Academie de Paris" prize stampings in gilt on covers, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Repairs to edges and corners of binding, scattered foxing.
FIRST EDITION, complete with main text and supplement issued in 1837, in a binding stamped "Prix du Concours Général" in gilt on covers. This important treatise covers equations to calculate the distribution of heat in bodies. Poisson, who succeeded Fourier as professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1806, was a prolific author on various aspects of applied mathematics. DSB XV, pp 480-490; Sotheran I, 3683.
