Morris's earliest engagements with three-dimensional art date back to the 1940's and works such as the object painting War Woman 1949 (National Galleries of Scotland). In the 1970s he produced his first sculptures in bronze, such as Fertility Figure (a cast of which was sold in these rooms 16 December 2020). The present work, and lot 44, belong to a series of works in which Morris revisited motifs from across his earlier-two dimensional output in three-dimensional forms.
