The Leicester Galleries label on the verso of this work reports it as being purchased by Lawrence Olivier. This is believed to be the iconic thespian actor and director, and winner of the 'Best Actor' award at the 1949 Oscars for his lead in Hamlet.
Olivier was a renowned art collector, and his thespian roots would chime well with the ownership of the present work, representing as it does a scene from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Olivier's collection contained several works depicting Shakespeare productions.
