From 1959 to 1963, engravers worked to carve 3500 separate blocks for the 100 prints of the 100 Cantos in The Divine Comedy. As a progressive set, each time another color was added, the entire tirage had to be printed, one color at a time. Extra proofs were pulled so that if printing mistakes were made, they would have enough prints for the tirage.
