The sitter and thence by descent to the present owner
John Monins (1741-1806) served first in the Royal Navy and subsequently in the 60th and 43rd Regiments in America. He resided at a mansion called "The Archbishop's Palace" in Canterbury. He married Sarah, daughter of Mr John Trice of Ashford, Kent. Their 4th son, William (born 1792) fought in the Peninsula War between 1808 and 1811 and served with the 18th Hussars during the campaign of 1815, being present at the Battle of Waterloo. Their 5th son, Eaton joined the 52nd Regiment and was also present at the Battle of Waterloo.
