Rowlandson's drawing relates to the betrothal between Frederick, Price of Württemberg (1754-1806) and George III's eldest daughter, Princess Charlotte, in 1796. The corpulent Frederick was a target for caricature and Rowlandson enjoys contrasting him with the wraith-like, beaky figure of the Duke of Gloucester. A more finished drawing in the collection of the British Museum omits the King and shows the two princes in what appears to be a stand-off (BM 1868,0808.6571). The figure of Lord Salisbury (Lord Chamberlain) on the right was taken from Gillray's etching The Bridal Night.
