Footnotes

Stoldo Lorenzi was a minor sculptor of the Mannerist period, greatly influenced by the sculptors of Mannerism, such as Giambattista Tribolo and Giambologna. The myth of Galatea is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses, where it is said that King Pygmalion is transformed into a sculptor and falls in love with a small ivory statuette he made with his own hands. The Goddess Aphrodite rewards him by transforming his sweetheart into a real woman and the two crown their love by getting married
