An Italian giltwood and gilt gesso mirror of unusual curved or vertically concave form
17th century, originally probably the cartouche frame for a painted coat of arms but later adapted for use as a mirror
The later oval bevelled plate within a lotus leaf and lappet moulded border, the shaped and volute scrolled cartouche carved with two nude bearded caryatids, below a plumed helmet surmounted by a lion passant cresting atop an acanthus wrapped pedestal, the shaped apron with a central mask wearing a headdress, re-gilt, 124cm high x 89cm wide.
