First edition of a pioneering study of the Irish language and typography by Jean Joseph Marcel (1776-1854). The Irish type was revised by Marcel from that used in the seventeenth century by the Propaganda Fide in Rome
Provenance: John Hely-Hutchinson, 2nd Earl of Donoughmore (1757-1832), ownership inscription dated 1820 on front free endpaper. A early twentieth century letterpress label inside upper cover notes "This book was left to Lord Donoughmore by Mrs Margaret Hely-Hutchinson, the daughter-in-law of the Honble. Christopher Hely-Hutchinson...".
