William Bedel, FIRST EDITION OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IN IRISH, title in English and Irish, double column, text in Irish, woodcut initials, without the initial and final blanks, title on modern stub with a cut down version of the initial leaf (concerned with the Irish alphabet) found in some copies affixed to the verso of the title, corner of pp.325/5 torn away with loss of a few letters of side-note, small burn-hole touching 2 letters on pp.465/6, some spotting, modern morocco, red morocco gilt spine label [Darlow & Moule 5534; Wing B2759A], 4to, Printed at London, 1685

The editio princeps of the Old Testament in Irish, translated by William Bedell (1571-1642), Bishop of Kilmore, with the assistance of Murtagh King and Dennis O'Sheridan, but not published until some forty years after Bedel's death. D & M. note that about 500 copies were printed with a Irish type presented by the Hon. R. Boyle, who refused to have printed the Apocrypha.
