Footnotes
"The first Protestant collection of religious devices, a book which played a very important role in the European emblem tradition" (Landwehr). The first edition of 1551 contained only 118 devices and did not have accompanying explanatory text. This second edition is expanded with the addition of 64 devices, alters some of the mottoes, and adds an explanation in French to the Latin caption of the first 118 and to the new devices.
