LOGGAN (DAVID)
Footnotes
LOGGAN'S VERY SCARCE AND ATTRACTIVE WORK ILLUSTRATING THE CAMBRIDGE COLLEGES - IN A FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING.
Loggan's much less scarce companion work, Oxonia illustrata, had been published in 1675 when he was working as "public sculptor" to the University of Oxford. A year later he began work on the present work, which was finally completed in 1690 whereupon Loggan was made engraver to Cambridge University. In addition to the views of the Cambridge colleges, it includes one of Eton, and a fine double-page map of Cambridge.
Provenance: Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent (1645-1702, admitted to Trinity College Cambridge, 1658), bookplate; Thomas Philip de Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, of Wrest Park (1781-1859), bookplate; "Bought of Bain March 1923", pencil note on front free endpaper.
