Footnotes

The internationally renowned artist and author, Michele Oka Doner (b.1945), is fascinated by the natural world and her work is informed by a lifelong study and appreciation of its organic forms, from bark and tree roots to the human body and the marine flora and fauna of her native Miami. Her output, which spans five decades, covers a vast range of mediums including sculpture, functional design objects, video installation, jewellery, costume and set design. Over the course of her career, Oka Doner has also created several important pieces of permanent public art installation, including 'Radiant Site' (1991), a groundbreaking tile installation for the New York subway and 'A Walk on the Beach', which is seen by 40 million travellers each year at Miami International Airport (1995-2010). One of the largest public artworks in the world, this latter work features a 1.25-mile long concourse consisting of 9,000 unique bronze sculptures inlaid with terrazzo and mother-of-pearl.
