Bonhams Whisky and Spirits department is delighted to present The Auld Alliance: Rare Whiskies and Cognacs from a Distinguished Collector; the first of two UK-based spirits sales to be held throughout July.Lots will open for bidding on 4th July at 12 noon and will close online at 1 minute intervals on 18th July from 12 noon BST// 1pm CET // 7am EST // 7pm HKT.Named after the historic pact between Scotland and France, this single-owner sale, which was amassed over 20 years by an avid collector, comprises some of the finest Single Malts and Cognacs. Chief among these illustrious spirits is the R&#233;my Martin Louis XIII Le Mathusalem (Lot 258) &#8211; a jaw dropping six litres of the finest eaux-des-vies, contained within a handcrafted crystal decanter. As only 50 are made each year, this statement piece is a must for any lover of Louis XIII. Of course, if six litres is a little on the large side, there is always the R&#233;my Martin Louis XIII Jeroboam (Lot 257), holding a slightly more modest three litres of spirit.The sale offers many opportunities for Cognac lovers to bid on some of the rarest liquids ever produced, such as The Hennessy &#201;dition Particuli&#232;re Coupe No.1 (Lot 277), created at the complete discretion of the Master Blender at Hennessy and one of only 27 decanters. Alternatively, three of the five vintages of the Hardy Legacy series &#8211; 1802, 1812, and 1820 (Lots 251- 253), are available for bidding. These were created for the most exclusive Hardy clientele and used only the rarest and high quality of Cognacs. A few precious lots, such as Hardy Noces de Platine (Lot 248) and R&#233;my Martin 1875 (Lot 254), offer the chance to own some of the rarest pre-phylloxera Cognacs. Created before the Phylloxera crisis of the mid-19th century that devastated the vineyards of the region, these spirits give a rare opportunity to sample distillates which are now mostly lost to history.Representing Scotland and opening the auction are three outstanding expressions from The Macallan. First, The Macallan Exceptional Single Cask #1683-13 1950 (Lot 215), which was released in July 2019 and bottled after 67 years in a single American Oak first fill sherry butt. Following on, The Macallan Down to Work 1967 (Lot 216) is a renowned bottle that was the third collaboration between The Macallan and Sir Peter Blake. Also featured is The Macallan Red Collection 50 year old (Lot 217), presented by Kirsteen Campbell, who became the first female Whisky Maker at the Speyside Distillery in 2019. This is an outstanding whisky, matured exclusively in sherry casks.The sale also showcases the venerable Glenfiddich 50 year old (Lot 28). At the time of its release in 1991, and one of only 500 ever produced, it was one of the oldest Scotch whiskies ever bottled. Other offerings from the distillery include The Glenfiddich Private Vintage 1955 (Lot 201) and Glenfiddich The Armagnac Cask Finish 46 year old 1973 (Lot 205). Glenfarclas, always a popular producer with collectors and consumers alike, features prominently, including many Family Cask expressions (Lot 223 &#8211; 233), as well as some more exclusive releases, such as the Pagoda Brass, Silver and Gold (Lots 219-221). Closing the sale, we have a wonderful collaboration between Glenfarclas and Hine (Lot 218), which pairs a bottle from each producer, both distilled in 1953. The two are housed in striking obelisk presentation cases, celebrating The Auld Alliance itself.
