Graduating from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in 1936, Nguyen Huyen was a co-founder of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and is known for his iconic work, featured on the 100 dong banknote issued in 1946. It depicts a farmer working in a field alongside an eye-catching blue buffalo, and it was chosen for the note to represent Vietnamese agriculture and production.
As a student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, he learnt the techniques of European oil painting, which he skillfully used to interpret Vietnamese landscapes with an Impressionist-influenced colour palette.
