These two portraits of the same individual afford a case study Fan Tchunpi's use of both European and traditional Chinese media. Relocating to France at 14 years old, she would study art, graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts in 1920. Returning to China, she worked closely with Qi Baishi 齊白石 (1864-1957) in Beijing, as well as Lingnan school masters Gao Qifeng 高奇峰 (1878-1951) and Gao Jianfu 高劍父 (1879-1951), exposing her to a remarkable breadth of Chinese brushwork techniques in the first half of the 20th century.
Fan Tchunpi first befriended Wang Jingwei 汪精衛 (1883-1944) and Chen Bijun 陳璧君 (1891-1959) during her Paris years, and she painted the portrait of their second daughter Wang Wenxing on three occasions. In this lot, the rendition in European media was done in 1944 when the artist was reunited with the Wang family in Nanjing, the second portrait was painted ten years later, when the artist reconnected with Wang Wenxing in Hong Kong in 1954. A third portrait of Wang Wenxing by Fan Tchunpi and bearing the same provenance was sold at Christies, Hong Kong, 29 May 2016, lot 432.
