Provenance
Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe, 7th Baron Calthorpe (1831–1912), his bookplate and arms on front cover.
Formerly in the library at Perry Hall, Warwickshire, home of the Gough-Calthorpes (demolished 1929).
Maharajah Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala (1872-1949, reg. 1877-1949) travelled widely during his long reign, and in fact met his fifth wife, Anita Delgado, in Paris in 1908 (see lot 201 in this sale for her memoir). In his preface he talks of his brief trip, and notes that readers may find his description of Japan and Manchuria of particular interest because of the current (1905) Russo-Japanese War. He is sharply critical of the Javanese and Chinese peoples. He also writes about Sri Lanka, Singapore, Saigon, and the Dutch East Indies in general.
