Andrew Reid attended the Royal Academy of Arts in London for three years, between 1921 and 1924, but did not fully graduate.
The cherub in the upper left corner holds a book that is inscribed on it's spine 'RA 1923', so one can assume this was the year Reid painted this large canvas. Other references to the RA are the charter scroll that the other cherub is holding and the bust on the right edge, that has a strong resemblance to Bust of Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A., ca.1778 by Giuseppe Ceracchi (1751-1801) (Royal Academy of Arts Collection no.03/1686).
The family believe that the female figure was based on the artist's sister, Mary 'May' Reid.
