An early work from 1937, the figures depicted in the present work include the artist's mother in the garden at Arngask House, Perth, Scotland. Margaret Mellis' father was a Presbyterian Minister, and had previously been employed in Gullane, East Lothian, before the family relocated to Arngask. This is also the location for lots 30 and 31.
