12mo (172 x 123 mm). [2], 25 [1] pp. Publisher's cloth spine over decorated boards highlighted in gilt, spine printed in red, cellophane jacket. Slightly rubbed at edges, cellophane jacket discolored and worn. With Covici Friede Christmas sentiment for 1936 announcing the upcoming publication of Of Mice and Men laid in.
Provenance: From the distinguished collection of Delmer and Mary Lou Daves.

LIMITED SIGNED FIRST EDITION, no. 90 of 196 copies signed by Steinbeck on the colophon page. WITH AN AUTOGRAPH POSTCARD SIGNED ("John Steinbeck"), postmarked Sag Harbor, NY, 17 July 1963, to one Delmer Lawrence Daves of Los Angeles, complaining of eye trouble and promising to respond in more detail to a letter when his eyesight improves. Originally written while a student at Stanford and remaining a favorite of the author, Steinbeck finally convinced Pascal Covici to issue Saint Katy the Virgin as a limited edition in 1936. American actress Mary Lou Daves began her career in Hollywood as Mary Lou Lender in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her work on the silver screen included films such as "The Stratton Story," "Back Street," "No Man of Her Own" and "State Fair" as well as notable television appearances on "The Bob Cummings Show," "Playhouse 90," and "Dragnet." Though it was her time on the 1938 Harold Lloyd comedy "Professor Beware" where she met and subsequently married the budding film director, Delmer Daves.

As both writer and director, Daves would go on to contribute his talents to movies such as "Destination Tokyo," a wartime submarine drama starring Cary Grant and John Garfield, "Dark Passage," a melodrama starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in 1947, and "Broken Arrow," starring James Stewart in 1950. The Hollywood couple were married for 39 years until the latter's death in 1977.
