Footnotes

Note
Kusakabe Kimbei worked for Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried as an assistant and colorist before establishing his own photography studio in Yokohama in 1881. He became a renowned purveyor of Japanese art to Western customers. This album exemplifies Kimbei's wide range of images, from pastoral views of cherry blossoms and placid lakes to bustling city scenes of commerce and entertainment. Individual photographs record sweeping views of Nagasaki, Mount Fuji, the Castle of Nagoya, and Kyoto's Kinkakuji Temple, among other sites.
