Note
Swedish photographer Björn Persson is internationally renowned for his images of African wildlife. He has spent many years travelling throughout the continent to document not only its stunning beauty, but also to draw attention to the rapid decline of its animal populations. From elephants, lions, and giraffes to gorillas, cheetahs, and leopards, the majestic creatures captured by Persson's camera stand as a reminder of what may be lost in the future.
This large-format portrait of a lion captures his power and self-possession. In Persson's book 'The Real Owners of the Planet' (2018), he notes this shocking statistic: "The [lion] population has been almost cut in half in the past two decades because of retaliatory killing by farmers (whose livestock the lions eat), as well as from trophy hunting and habitat loss." (p. 88).
