Footnotes

Lewis Wickes Hine wrote this note about his image of eight newsies in Buffalo, New York: "Ready for afternoon selling, group on Seneca St. 4 P.M." In 1908 Hines had been hired by the National Child Labor Committee, established by the U.S. government in 1904 to examine the living and working conditions of American children. He is estimated to have traveled more than 50,000 miles in a ten-year period in order to document the lives of working children through his photographs and notes.
