Paul Strand, centennial monograph, Aperture/ National Gallery of Art, p. 127
In 1953 renowned American photographer Paul Strand, then living in France, suggested to Italian screenwriter Cesare Zavattini that they produce a book together focusing on a small town in Italy that would reveal the spirit of its people. Zavattini suggested his own birthplace of Luzzara, in the Po Valley.
Strand's photographs of Luzzara included a series of penetrating portraits, such as the young farmer offered here.
