Benjamin Robert Haydon (Plymouth 1785-1845 London)

A book of sketches, mainly after Egyptian objects, bass reliefs and paintings, many inscribed with colour notes, some inscribed in French
the title page inscribed and dated 'Paris/Bibliotheque du Roi/1814'
the majority pen and brown ink, a few in graphite
18.5 x 12.5cm (7 5/16 x 4 15/16in).

Footnotes

The second page is inscribed by D. Roberts 'this Book of Sketches, was presented to me by Thomas Macdonald who recd [sic] it from Haydon himself - but it is more probable that he stole it'.

In May of 1814 there was a temporary lull in hostilities between England and France and Haydon travelled to Paris with his fellow artist David Wilkie. Haydon's aim was to see Napoleon's collection of art and artefacts in the Louvre but he also appears to have sketched from prints as one inscription, in French, states 'copie a Paris Juin 2d 1814- a la Bibliotheque de l'Institut'.
