In 1847, Asher B. Durand visited the Catskills region of New York, just to the west of the village of Kingston on the Hudson River. During this visit he created many sketches of the nearby mountain High Point, also known locally as Ashokan High Point. He would return to the area in the summers of 1853 and 1855 to continue to paint the mountains. The present work Study for High Point: Shandaken Mountain was likely painted during either the 1847 or 1853 excursion. This work is the basis for Durand's 1853 submission to the National Academy of Design's annual exhibition in New York City, which is now in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Unlike his large "historical landscapes," here Durand is focused on capturing the light within the bucolic setting, which was becoming increasingly popular amongst the urban American public.
Please note that the correct title for this lot is Study for High Point: Shandaken Mountains.
