Words from Harry Harrison
Being asked to create a piece of art to commemorate the auction of a 72-year-old whisky in Hong Kong immediately threw up the questions "What was Hong Kong like in 1948, and has it matured as well as the whisky?".
The thought also sprang to mind that, had the cask of Gordon & MacPhail - Glen Grant Single Malt turned up on these shores back then, there probably wouldn't be any left to auction now.
So, I've tried to create something that's both a celebration of the spirit of Hong Kong as imagined in 1948, and a celebration of the spirit on auction, but when it comes to maturity, my money's on the whisky! Sláinte!
Whisky Tasting Notes
"I can honestly say this is one of the finest malts it has been my plea-sure to taste in forty years of professional exploration. It is outstanding - rarely, if ever, have I been able to write so fulsome a testimonial!"
Charles Maclean MBE
Master of the Quaich
"Really, to understand the true complexity of this malt may take another 72 years. I left this as the final whisky to taste for the 2022 Whisky Bible. Well, they do say leave the best 'til last... 97.5pts"

"Not a trace of old age, nowhere, never. The only way to find out is to watch all the following aromas popping out one after the other for a good quarter of an hour, especially various very aromatic honeys and flowers such as our beloved woodruff and honeysuckle. In short, it's the complexity that gives the age away here." 5 stars
