PURPLE CHALCEDONY CARVING OF OWLS BY LUIS ALBERTO QUISPE APARICIO

The rectangular base formed of a slab of chocolate brown jasper with a dramatic pattern of large yellow circles, supporting a gold vermeil branch with a purple chalcedony owl with offspring, each with cabochon opal eyes. The owls are carved from a single specimen of bright purple chalcedony. Measuring 9 1/2 x 6 x 8 1/2in (24.1 x 15.3 x 21.6cm)

Following a second-generation family tradition in the fabrication of objets d'art, Luis' studio specializes in the carving of ruby. The second hardest stone after diamond, few artists have managed to successfully work this mineral since it requires a very advanced technique for carving and polishing.
